Islington Children's Services Outstanding

Posted 30th January 2025

The latest Ofsted Inspection report for Islington rated the experiences and progress of children in care and care leavers as "outstanding" and praised the work of the House Project saying:

"Since the 2020 inspection, the experiences and progress of children in care, the House project, increased mental health support and the response to children who are missing or at risk of exploitation have gone from strength to strength.

The emotional and practical help that is offered to young people to help them prepare for adulthood is extensive and strongly embedded. The accredited independence programme, known as the House project, and the newly developed Next Steps programme, support young people to develop the essential skills needed to help them navigate the opportunities and challenges of adult life and secure their own tenancies. The House project and Next Steps groups have made a real difference to young people’s lives. Young people really appreciate the ‘moving in manual’ that provides practical help, brought to life by YPAs, to help them find solutions to problems when they live alone. The success of this wraparound support has unquestionably contributed to there having been no tenancy breakdowns over the past two years.

The House project, the Next Steps programme and all the work that surrounds them are impressive."

Celebrating Success at the Frontline Awards
Celebrating Success at the Frontline Awards

In May, we were proud to attend the Frontline Awards to celebrate Coventry City Council’s Pathways service winning the Multi-Agency Partnership of the Year award. Funded by the Rayne Foundation, the Pathways programme brings together a number of organisations, including NHP, Coram Voice and The Rees Foundation, working closely alongside the Throughcare Service, Coventry House Project and Lifelong Links. Together, the partnership supports young people leaving care to develop skills, build positive relationships, and focus on their emotional health and wellbeing. Three cohorts of young people from Coventry have now go through the Pathways Programme. Seeing the partnership recognised nationally was a fantastic moment and a powerful reflection of the impact collaborative working can have in supporting care-experienced young people.

Aspirational Awards Update

In May, the Aspirational Awards panel awarded just over £15,000 to 19 young people across our LHPs. It was inspiring to see such a wide range of ideas, goals and determination reflected in the applications, and a privilege to support more young people as they take their next steps forward. Funding in Round 9 supported training + graduate employment scheme, equipment for a baking business and support for other businesses, sports sessions, music lessons, lifeguard course, and day trips. We have also recently completed a 3 year review of our Aspirational Awards and the impact they’ve had. Over the past 3 years, we’ve awarded over £147,000 to 138 young people (not including figures from our most recent round in May). If you would like to find out more about how to support the Aspirational Awards please get in touch.
